My favorite Christmas memory is actually one particular Christmas, that of 1972, when I was 19 years old. I was at my boyfriend's house (we both grew up in the burbs of Baltimore, Maryland), opening presents that clear, sunny morning. There was a HUGE wrapped box (about the size of a car fender) with my name on it. My boyfriend and his family told me to start opening it, so I did. It seemed to be filled with crumpled newspapers, but as I literally dug in (at one point actually climbing into the box!) I found lots of nice presents. Then I found a ring box; it was empty! "Pop" (the granddad) wasn't in on this, poor guy, but he was present. He and I meticulously went thru all the newspaper, boxes, etc. It took at least an hour, while the rest of the family (including my boyfriend) went about their business (shoulda been suspicious then). My boyfriend's mom called us both up for Christmas brunch. I was really upset! However, no one else seemed worried at all. Grrrrr. I reluctantly went to the dining room table to where I usually sat (I had been dating my boyfriend for about 2-1/2 years). On my plate was a wedding garter in a clear plastic box. ??? I opened it with some curiousity (still distracted by the empty ring box) and on top of the lacy garter was......yep! A beautiful diamond engagement ring! I could've choked all of them! They were practically bursting with laughter. My now fiancee never did propose in a formal way. Quite confident of himself!

I married him on September 22, 1973. We were married for 30 years until he was struck by illness and died on September 26, 2003. Diagnosed and gone in eight weeks. Two days after his 51st birthday, September 24th. We managed a very small anniversary "celebration" the week before, with half our original wedding party present. I do miss him very much. We literally grew up together, since we met at 17 years of age.

I digress. But that's my favorite Christmas memory!
